My work involves driving between different sites around ICAD pretty much daily, lots of short trips with the engine barely warming up before I shut it off again, and I think that stop and start pattern has been slowly wrecking my battery life over the past couple years without me really connecting the dots until recently. Last month the battery finally could not keep up anymore, dashboard warning lights kept popping up randomly and the AC would flicker off for a second here and there which was honestly annoying more than dangerous but still a clear sign something needed replacing soon. A coworker who has been dealing with fleet vehicles for years suggested I look into a Quality Fiamm car battery in ICAD since apparently that brand tends to handle this kind of frequent short trip usage pattern better than some of the cheaper options that just cannot keep up with constant partial charging cycles. I ended up finding some details on a page from that talked about battery types suited for different driving habits, which was honestly more relevant to me than I expected since most battery advice online just assumes you are doing normal daily commutes rather than this stop start nonsense I deal with. Got it installed about two weeks ago now and so far things have been smooth, no more flickering, starts feel strong even after sitting for a few hours between site visits, though obviously two weeks is not exactly a long term test so take that with a grain of salt for now. I am curious if anyone else here does similar short distance heavy usage driving and has found certain battery brands hold up noticeably better under that kind of strain, because I feel like this is a pretty common situation for people working in industrial areas but not something that gets talked about much compared to regular commuter advice. Also wondering if there is anything I should be doing differently on my end, like letting the engine run a bit longer between trips, to actually extend the life of whatever battery I have installed rather than just hoping the new one lasts longer purely because of the brand.
